Last year the Home Minister Hishamudin promised to settle all personal document issues within 2 years -and the results up till now seems to have overshot the targets! 93360 Birth Certificate applications have been settled-which is appreciably higher than the 25 000 said to be outstanding last November. 32 927 `citizenship’ applications and 16 812 entry permit applications-which combined to be 49 739 cases, have been settled- also higher than the 40 000 identified last year. So could there be more outstanding documents not processed? The previous official figures eg the 35 000 quoted as without IC and BC here, seems to be gross underestimates! We have reasons to believe that there are still a lot more such cases out there: from our ground investigations in this year there are still hundreds of cases which we had identified in Kanovit, Baram, Sg Asap etc. At the Sibu by-election we also found the JPN working hard to try to register those in Sibu who have personal documents problems. So some how we need to clarify what exactly are the real extent of the lack of personal documents in Sarawak or else we may get misled into thinking that the problems had been solved!

The stage is set for a state election: the paper’s under Taib’s control is screaming the kind of headlines which justify a state elections eg Sarawak needs Taib (Sarawak Tribune), Opposition is out to `destroy government’(Borneo Post-appended below) etc. Look like there is no return to this point for a state election to be called!

One of Sarawak’s oldest political party SNAP has got its earlier de-registration set aside by the court-confirming it as a participant to the imminent state elections. This is to be welcome as there had been many cases of political parties being hampered in their participation in the elections either due to non-registration or de-registration. It is to be noted that participation in the election is as much a voting right as the right to vote. Previously a party which was applying for registration in the 2006 state election was denied registration and thus disallowed it to participate in the election in its own name/logo.

Taib comparable to Lee Kuan Yew?
True, Sarawak still needs Taib, but then again its a one man opinion, and not necessarily the opinion of all Sarawakians. If only there is a fair and truly independent body to conduct a survey now, I wouldn’t dare bet on Taib.
To compare Taib to Lee Kuan Yew is another story, which we shouldn’t be talking about. Sarawak is not Singapore, and if it is in any way like Singapore, then it should have opted out like Singapore did in 1963 from the Federation. As Wahab said in Sarawak Tribune today (June 23, 2010) Sarawak’s hardcore poor poverty has gone down to below 10%, but why was it Taib said that the Bumiputra were, are and still poor, and thats why they depend on BN and continue to support BN. By rights, Sarawakians should be richer from their brethems in Semenanjung, despite being the richest State in Malaysia. Why so? Jawab lah Wahab.

BN's concept is if the money is planned `before' (official) election (period) it is not corruption!
BN disclosed the figure confidently in Parliament because it has a default answer to accusation of bribery: the allocations were pre-planned. Well, the best practice elsewhere eg Philippines, is to stop any allocations, tenders etc 3 months ahead of any elections to stop the perception of corruption and to stop incumbent parties/candidates to gain mileage from these public fund allocations. BN is simply a hypocrite to claim that the allocations were pre-planned-because there were no similar allocations elsewhere in the country. The claim should be challenged to the last avenue!
