When half the rural citizens are not registered as voters the EC cannot print enough voter registration forms for enfranchising them-how serious are the EC in doing its job? Picture show member of Sarawak Road Show Ooi TP helping an rural Iban youth to fill up a voter registration form by using his thump print.

Selangor EC has, after complaints by DAP, claimed that there had not been any shortage of voter registration forms. They blamed DAP for holding 20% of the forms without returning to the EC. However DAP retorted that they had indeed done a lot of registrations-as proven by the record that they had led all parties in voter registration in the last 6 months. However the same situation cannot be said of the Sarawak EC whose chief Dato Takun disclosed that there had been a shortage of voter registration forms due to supply bottlenecks from KL!

There are many West Malaysians who are denied entry to Sarawak-not due to the power that Sarawak has-but due to the ruling politicians’ abuse of such power. So MPs, NGOs, poet, artists are among the long list of people who are banned from entering Sarawak. So what is behind a minister claiming that Sarawak is willing to dialogue with NGOs? Is it across the fence?

Sarawak’s long house communities have been troubled by lack of land grant for decades -yet the government who failed so far to survey the 5000 long houses in Sarawak now announce that they will start surveying not only the long houses-but each individual unit/`pintu’! So it is a case of take it or leave it! Or is it an election induced ploy which will not be followed up like any other promises?

There are numerous reports on the number of mobile units going to Sarawak’s interior to register the unquantifiable citizens in the interior: earliest it was only 2; then from beginning of this year the number went up to 5; Then the number undergoes a drastic jump to 159see report below). Meo-Net visited Kuching JPN today to find out. According to a JPN officer there she think that there are 5 teams out there, going out once a month. She said that there are 2 teams in Baram alone. When she was told that the media said there are 15 mobile units she was surprised! We are too! Even JPN don’t know how many mobile units in Sarawak! In fact the story is: the mobile units are not under the JPN’s control. These mobile units seems to have their own command structures-and report directly to the ministers!

The election date guessing game is continuing. Why? Because no one can afford to be caught off guard-with campaign periods which are little more than 1 week. Without adequate preparation any candidate would be dead duck before the beginning of the election campaign! So for free and fair elections there must be at least 1 month for general and state elections, while by-elections should be given 3 weeks. If that is possible then the election date would attract less intense speculations!
