Ulu Niah set up blockade against company for not keeping promise:(added video link)

This morning representatives from Rumah Ranggong and Rumah Belili, Ulu Niah erected a blockade against Niamas Istimewa Sdn. Bhd., a JV company involving BLD and SLDB which renegade on their promise to develop NCR land of the natives in Ulu Niah under Konsep Baru. See video here.

More updates: the natives have actually taken the company to court-with coming hearing dated on Jan 24th. They decided to set up the blockade because the proceeding in the court is too slow. The company has taken the land and sold to another one later-the Niamas Istimewa Sdn Bhd. There is oil palm planted on the land for years but the natives are not getting their dues under the Konsep Baru joint-ventures because the company keep claiming that they have not started to make profit. This is a common occurrence which give a bad name to the Konsep Baru schemes where the natives are given 30% equity in the joint venture operation. Many natives who operate their own oil palm plantations tend to see better return from their land than these joint-ventures.

Loggers’ PR challenged by Penans?

Logging companies are good at PR-so the news of giving a generator and a chainsaw splashed over the Star paper today-after there is a headline in Utusan Borneo highlighting the poor housing given to Penans. Will they succeed in covering up their previous records?

‘Power’ to Penans in Long Baram

 

THE Penan village of Long Abang in the upper Baram area has received a new electric generator and chainsaw from timber company Interhill.

The contributions came just several weeks after the company donated chairs worth several thousand ringgit to the Long Abang Church.

Why don’t the EC inform the public they can process the registration within 1 month if there are elections coming?

The EC is repeating the offical line that voter registration takes about 3-4 months. But in all previous by-elections the electoral rolls have been updated to within 1 month of the election date. What difference does that make? If the registration take 1 month and more many citizens would give up registering themselves more than 1 month ahead! Since more people would naturally take more interest in registration when election come closer this is a big failure to affirm the voting rights of the people!
