4 MEO-Net’s observers paid a visit to MACC on Apr 11th, 10.00am, considering  that MACC is  part of the election administrator for the Sarawak state elections. MACC’s officer Sendri Ugi who was transfered here recently answered our questions-after telling us that all the higher ups were all away. From the discussion we were told the following:

* MACC has 4 regional offices in Sarawak with the following hot line numbers: Kuching (082-245115); Sibu(084-311982); Bintulu(086-316200), Miri (085-415404) Limbang is serviced by Miri officers;

Latest news from Sg Asap is that BN through the Kapit Land & Survey department visited the various long houses in Sg Asap to offer the long overdue compensation to the long suffering resettlers there-perhaps reflecting some electoral jitters on the part of the ruling parties. However the compensation package, after allowing for various deductions eg the unpaid electricity charges by the residents and other costs allegedly incurred by the re-settlers, amount to unsatisfactory amount that make the residents think twice whether to sign up to the package or not. The natives will exercise their wisdom to work out their response this time!

Freedom to campaign in Sarawak election seriously curtailed!

From reports by election observers in various parts of Sarawak there are a number of significant ways where freedom to campaign have been seriously curtailed in the Sarawak state elections: Firstly, long houses are stopping Opposition parties to campaign-cutting off the info-poor residents from getting information from all sides, which is a necessary condition to make free and informed choice; Tuai Rumah (Chief of long houses) who have just enjoyed a doubling of their government provided monthly allowance (from Rm450.00 to Rm800.00) from February this year are instigated by ruling politicians to keep out Opposition campaigners, thus seriously compromising the freedom of choice by the voters living in the rural communities.

The 4 electoral rolls which are finally ready are available in PDF format -in contrast to the rest which are in ACCESS format. Why they choose to release the rolls in PDF format which are harder to be used for analysis purpose compared to ACCESS? The EC should answer these questions or risk being seen as a non-voter friendly election adminsitrator!

The last 4 electoral rolls are: Baleh, Pelagus, Kartibas, Asajaya
