The MACC took statement from 1 Iban voter and 2 SEW observers today-but did not indicate if there will be any follow up actions. The situation prompt SEW leader to wonder if the MACC was just going through the motion after a report about vote buying had been lodged with them by DAP’s Wong Ho Leng.

The Iban voter Robin said he was willing to be a witness to the vote buying episode before polling in Bawan Assan. He gave his statement about 9.00am. Earlier he has been interviewed by Radio Free Sarawak about the vote buying incident. The 2 SEW observers were asked to give statement about 12.00noon. However they were not allowed to be accompanied by their lawyer -resulting in a debate which lasted till 1.00pm when the statements were taken. Boney Wong’s statement was understood to be taken with accompaniment of a lawyer for part of the time while the other SEW observer’s statement was taken without any lawyer’s presence. The statements were given till close to 5.00pm. Wong Meng Chuo of SEW was with the observers who gave the statement to MACC.

Meanwhile it is understood that there may be other recorded evidence of vote buying from another constituency waiting to be released.

Even EC Chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz admitted he was in no position to decide whether giving or buying of votes is considered a corrupt practice – saying “I’m no expert.” If SPR or MACC are really serious, after the police report being lodged by YB Wong Ho Leng, they could interrogate all the longhouse residents in Bawang Assan, and I’m sure they would have more than enough evidence. They have the legal means to subpoena the longhouse people. In this way they can get the real stories.

On a hindsight, now that YB Wong Ho Leng and DAP Sibu had lodged a police report, and two SEW Observers were called to give statement by the MACC. What’s next? Is this merely a window dressing, or will MACC and SPR really want to pursue this matter?
