In a place where the main stream media cannot be relied upon to report the truth there are various speculations and rumour which often stand in as the truth -which some how are often proven true later. While the marriage of Taib to a Lebanese girl was never reported fully in the main stream media the following are shaping up to be the `understanding’ by some section of Sarawakians:
1. The Lebanese girl is actually 17 years old-not 28 or in her 30’s as reported in the mainstream press;
2. The CM’s wife is still anonymous-but said to be chosen because she resembles the 1st wife of the CM Laila; It was further said that the new wife wore Laila’s ornaments, or another identical set, on the wedding day;
3.There will be a big official marriage reception on Jan 15th to invite wider VIP’s while the first reception in Taib’s home was only for hundreds of family relatives; It remains to be seen if her name will be released then;
Given the imminence of the state election-due by July this year, the preoccupation of Taib with his marriage in inviting speculation that he either
a. really want to step aside in favour of a succesor;
b. is buying time to hope for a synchronised state and national elections to head off the onslaught of the combined opposition campaign;Some Opposition party members are noticing the desperation from the BN’s side as few of his ministers rose to defend the aging CM when there are almost daily expose of the CM’s conspicuously unaccountable wealth; And indeed there is no defense for such an mammoth pillaging of the people’s and the state’s wealth over the last 30 years of his rule. There are also speculations that the marriage is part of an exit strategy for Taib so that he can retire overseas later. The more he does not provide information to keep the marriage as a private affairs the more the marriage tend to be dragged into the intricacies of the high-stake politics surrounding the CM.
