Today is one day where the NCR land owners from 12 villages at Pantu District, Sungai Tengah (near Sri Aman) won a case against the encroaching oil plam company after 6 years of court struggle! Over 100 villagers turned up at the High Court of Kuching this afternoon to listen to the 28-page decision from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. The decision by the judge Dato Linton was remarked as a most thorough decision ever made on land cases, by fellow lawyers. It is not known if the fearless judgments from the judge has anything to do with him being sidelined in previous promotion opportunities.
Land encroachments have been rampant under the 30-year rule of the current Chief Minister-which could produce sufficient resentment by the normally accommodating natives to produce upset election results. Sometime violence are used to show who is the boss in the deep jungles, as happened in a case reported in the last post here.
The Pantu Dayaks plan to celebrate their victory on this coming sunday in their long house. It is expected that the oil palm company will appeal against such judgment as in past cases.
