While the press is still speculating when the Sarawak state elections will start the parties have already started their run -as evidenced by the campaign activities last week end: PKR has a number of campaign activities including one in Balai Ringin -where they crossed path with UMNO’s deputy president Muhyiddin’s entourage, who was campaigning furiously around Betong area. The police escourt purposely turned on the siren as they passed by the SADIA’s office in Balai Ringgin where the PKR function was held. The police refused to give PKR a permit for its gathering which was held at the town centre, but the local polce allowed the function, which included a PACA training to continue till 4.00pm. Baru Bian, Nicholas Bawin and a few leaders came to deliver a speech in the afternoon. Muhyiddin reportedly called on the Sarawakian voters not to go Selangor way in a speech earlier. Since both sides have started campaign earlier wonder why the EC still insist on short campaign period-usually 10 days in Sarawak? If there are adequate campaign period then the parties won’t need to campaign ahead!
Taib crying wolf again?
Meanwhile PBB is campaigning in Balingian where Taib suggest that he would step down after the elections on age consideration. But this is not the first time he said so. In previous elections he had said to want to step down but did not do so because he claimed that he could not find a capable successor-a claim dismissed by all outside and inside his party. But the offer to retire is probably calculated to attract sympathy vote from his supporters who may still give him a `last’ chance. Afterall he can still claim that no one in Sarawak can lead the state government as well as he has been doing it!
Alleged UMNO gathering failed to happen
Meanwhile a rumoured UMNO supporters instigated gathering at a city center field yesterday fail to materialise-but attracted numerous police and journalists. That happen when no one even turned up. What if some people actually turned up…..????
