Nazri the defecto Law Minister who said that Malaysian elections are on par with other countries today claim that overseas Malaysians must return to vote to show their patriotisim-ignoring the fact that most countries do allow their overseas citizens to vote by post or at the nearest embassies. So why is our de facto Law Minister suddenly fail to equal what other countries can do for their citizens?
In any case there are a group of overseas citizens who are going to take the government to court over this denial of their citizens’ Constitutionally guaranteed rights. Earlier on they had managed to get the government to look into enabling the overseas Malaysian students to vote by post-a right denied many years by the embassy staff who imposed their unlawful interpretation of the law on these non-government sponsored overseas students.
Let’s see if there can be advances on this front! It is interesting to note that Nazri reportedly made the comment after being asked by reporters if he and his government is afraid of the vote of the overseas Malaysians! Now he has a choice to make: to be patriotic and enable the overseas fellow citizens to vote -or be a unpatriotic partisan who are scared of the verdict of their better informed fellow citizens and use this opportunity to suppress their vote!
