Latest news from Sg Asap is that BN through the Kapit Land & Survey department visited the various long houses in Sg Asap to offer the long overdue compensation to the long suffering resettlers there-perhaps reflecting some electoral jitters on the part of the ruling parties. However the compensation package, after allowing for various deductions eg the unpaid electricity charges by the residents and other costs allegedly incurred by the re-settlers, amount to unsatisfactory amount that make the residents think twice whether to sign up to the package or not. Of course the electoral calculation behind the offers of the compensation is not beyond the natives’ mind. It is just another form of vote buying so that there is an excuse to pass some money to the voters. So what better excuse than to dress it up as the compensation that is awaited by the re-settlers? But the electoral mentality means that they may just want to give enough to keep the cash strapped natives happy enough till after the polling day-and not the full compensation that is due for the natives. The natives will exercise their wisdom to work out their response this time!
Seen from another perspective the yielding to the re-settlers’ demand, no matter how superficial, reflect some electoral jittery by the BN campaign. The natives could probably withhold their acceptance to wait for more offers towards the end of the campaign….
