SIBU: The police here have reason to smile as the dust settles after the state election.
Its chief ACP Shafie Ismail commented yesterday that the 10th State Election was the most hotly contested, yet the most peaceful in Sibu.
Shafie told The Borneo Post yesterday there were only two reports of misdemeanor during the campaign period.
Of the two reports received during the campaign period, one was splashing red paint on a candidate’s billboard while the other was about an egg being thrown into a ceramah premise, landing on the roof.
He said the police were investigating both cases.
“I am happy the political parties and supporters kept to the book of the law and avoided clashes.”
The police chief hoped this air of harmony among the people of different political ideologies would be maintained not only during the election, but in everyday life.
On their role, he said the police were on the ground monitoring the situation round the clock.
Back to crime now, he said they were watching over the neighbourhood as property crime remained their main focus.
“There have been no violent crimes reported of late,” revealed Shafie, but that compared to last year, there had been a slight increase in property crime.
He said the police were all out to prevent the situation from getting out of hand, and called for public cooperation.
Shafie said they would soon launch an operation, but it was not the time to reveal their plan yet.
