MACC chief Datuk Abu Kassim reportedly said today that the Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud is under investigation by MACC currently, following numerous complaints lodged by many parties-but that announcement was followed by the MACC’s standard procedure: there won’t be, ever, any update on the progress of the investigation. Just like the announced investigation on Najib following the Sibu by-election. That may raise a question: if by announcing an investigation the MACC can close the issue in the media then the MACC might as well do it to all other corruption cases. This is not the 1st time that Taib come under investigation for corruption.
Taib had been investigated by the Anti-corruption Agencey under Mahathir. The proverbial reply from Taib to Mahathir at that time was: What I did is similar to what you do-so what do you want to investigate? The ACA team was withdrawn after going through Taib’s files for a few days. Will history repeat itself after BN West Malaysia lost big time in West Malaysia but BN Sarawak did well in the last Sarawak State Elections?
It should be noted that the Police does not find investigation hampered by some reports on the progress of the investigations. Previously the MACC Review Panel said that once evidence is exposed the complainant lose their protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act-they said that in relation to the vote-buying allegation by election observers group MEO-Net. However the evidences on Taib’s corruption had been similarly exposed in Sarawak Report-yet the MACC Chief is quiet on the protection to the complainant. Smell something ????
