If Swiss’ FINMA find Taib guilty of money laundering in due course(it is still a big IF) then post-Taib era may drop like a ripe durian fruit, with its many spikes poking in all directions and its pungent smell poking every nose around…Many issues will arise-among which are: who will be his immediate successor to stall any more hands on his remaining wealth? Where will he run to-to cover his face? Some possible retirement homes are surveyed here:
Destinations which are unlikely:
Switzerland-not advisable as it may want to put him in the dock for more investigations
US-unlikely, it have similar anti-money laundering laws as Switzerland
Australia, UK, Canada-unlikely, they may follow Switzerland to launch investigations into Taib’s property there
Japan, Hong Kong-unlikely as they are investigating/prosecuting Japanese shipping companies who give/pressured to give kick backs to Taib’s company registered in Hong Kong;
Where it would be embarrasing:
West Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore-unfavourable as he may run into many Sarawakians working there, too embarrassing to start with
The rest of European Union countries-unlikely as European countries like to share intelligence especially on human rights/environmental destroyers! Taib will be `invited guests’ on many media to do a tell-all expose on how he plundered the Borneo tropical rainforests…
The rest of ASEAN countries-unlikely as he will be too conspicuous everywhere, except may be in the Golden Triangle…
Lebanon, Syria-may be, since there is where his many rich relatives are
Monaco-likely, since the laws on financial accountability is not so tight and a prince is his good friend!
Dubai, Bahrain-the jewels of West Asia, where Taib may be interested to add another couple of man-made island and villas to his property collection! He will almost live like a king there!
Pakistan-how about buy a unit like the one in Abbotabad used by that other world-known figure???Pakistan government will have no problem to claim they have no knowledge of someone like him staying there! It is definitely safe -good for the most wanted man for 10 years! But such spartan life for years, till his end- without internet, no shopping, no entertainment etc may not be possible for Taib. Given the options above there is no need to consider this last, last `resort’!
The rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa-he can take his chances there as the rich can still get away with many/any things in these countries. Many dictators who have been shooed from their own countries have found welcoming arms in West Asian countries eg Saudi Arabia. Only in China do they shoot convicted corrupter.
So: if FINMA find Taib guilty of money laundering the world may still be large enough for him to find another home! You never know if he is not already making plans about it!
