Even it is still weeks before the Bersih march were to take place the anti-democratic forces in the nation’s capital are running helter skelter to threaten, distract, challenge etc the mammoth rally which they can’t stop, match nor argue against. The ruling party UMNO try to brand the rally as a threat to national security-yet they are all OK with a previous million-youth rally in Putrajaya where allegedly RM28mil was used. In that rally the UMNO president Najib used the opportunity to call upon the gathered youth -said to number 2000, to defend Putajaya for BN-showing that the government sponsored rally was nothing more or less than a BN party rally. UMNO also stick to another line that the Bersih rally-optimistically estimated at 100 000, will disrupt traffic and disrupt business, while the million-youth assembly was said by the same spokeperson to be incapable of doing the same. They also claim that rallies like this will scare away foreign investors-forgetting that foreign investors come from many democratic countries themselves where rallies are every day affairs! The prejudice and hypocrisy of the anti-democratic party is becoming more and more glaring by the day-and those who don’t believe in it are no longer bothered about it!
In a democratic country eg in Indonesia rallies are common place and the police don’t repress such democratic expression from the people. The Malaysian party will not be able to convince people that rallies cannot be peacefully carried out-even though the ruling party themselves had just organised a `million-youth rally’ without incidence and even with little notice by the public!
So far the police is playing the stick game by refusing to give police permit-then blame the organiser for going ahead with the rally without a police permit as though they ignore the application. When it appears that the rally will go on anyway the pro-UMNO group PERKASA threaten to bring a bigger group to confront the Bersih rally. Even that the organiser of Bersih has not been deterred and said they respect the PERKASA’s right to have their own rally! Everyone are welcome to step forward to support free and fair elections-including the ruling parties-so it said in its most recent public pronouncement.
The UMNO minister for Home Affairs Hishamuddin said that they will be `even handed’ towards the Bersih rally as well as the counter rally. He also said that they will take actions against anyone who go against the laws. Put together the party is openly abusing government apparatus to try their best to crush the people’s rally for free elections-as they are used to doing!
So this is the state of affairs with people who demand free and fair elections in Malaysia. If they were not so sure before by now everyone knows from the ruling party’s reactions that they are not bothered about free and fair elections. They just want to carry on their show irrespective of what the people really want. Such dictatorial government will certainly go away sooner or later-but they will wreck as much havoc before they retreat into the history. The people are made to pay a painful send off to them-and look like the people are prepared to risk the police baton, the tear gas and water cannon etc to achieve democracy-just like repressed people everywhere in the world!
