Bersih arrests have gone up again: 14 arrests of PKR leaders in Kedah; 3 PKR leaders from Johor and 1 DAP Exco from Selangor(Liu Tian Kiu). Other than that 1 young Korean intern with an NGO arrested earlier has been deported today as a `foreign agent’. The worst news is probably from MCMC-which reprotedly want to close down all web sites critical of the government on the Bersih rally.
The Bersih rally has become a stand off between a government which want to impose its will on the citizens without bother to provide any convinsing argument and a citizen who have largely turned Opposition in all major urban centres(70% of Malaysians live in urban centres) . The ruling party don’t even bother to persuade the citizens in a clear thrust to crack the will of the people’s resistance. All kind of propaganda and thinly stretched excuses have been amplified by Government or party run media to scare and intimidate the population into submission.
Double standards are used by the police in their treatment between pro and anti-BN groups, with alomost all the arrests from the pro-Bersih groups though the Home Ministers claim to treat all rallying groups on July 9th the same way. The worst threat they can give now is to use draconian Internal security Act-which provide for detention without trial, to arrest rally organisers ahead of the rally and to declare Emergency rule where the parliament will be suspended. But the organisers already said that they will still go on with the rally even in that eventuality!
In a signof further desperation the MCMC suggest that they may consider shutting down the critical we sites ahead of the Bersih rally-seemingly copying the tactics by regimes nearing their end elsewhere!
The price to pay for holding back the will of the people to march for free election will pile up against the unpopular ruling party of over half a century!
In a show of chinks in the UMNO’s armour the EC chief is making some noise to offer some too-little-too-late changes to the unfair election administrations, moving away from the hardline position just a day ahead by his deputy. It may just be a good-EC, bad-cop drama put up for damage control exercise for the UMNO/BN regime.
But the support for Bersih is growing: there are protests against the crackdown in Malaysia from Thailand and Indonesia yesterday. Bersih’s support rallies have been organsed in numerous cities in US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Korea. The whole world has come to know how the BN regime is imposing its will on its people. The lack of freedom of assembly in the country has now been exposed for all to see!
