2000 foreigners have been issued 2 identification documents by the JPN-showing a weakness of the biometric system in weeding out repeat registrants! If this happen for voters -after the biometric system is adopted for voter registration, it would mean a disaster where the problem it tries to avoid will hit back with even stronger force! Why the JPN biometric system can allow such a weakness to appear? The explanations from the JPN are not convincing: the biometric database should be able to detect the same biometric data from the applicant-and reject the 2nd application/registration. If it failed to do it then what confidence that Malaysians should have for it to not double register voters? The JPN owe the voters a better explanation!
|2000 Foreign Nationals Have More Than Two Documents|
|PUTRAJAYA — About 2,000 cases of foreign nationals with one biometric authentication but having more than two documents have been detected by the Immigration Department at 69 entry points since June 1.Immigration department director-general Alias Ahmad said on Tuesday that the list was being scrutinised as investigations were being carried out to determine who they were.
“This (having two documents) could be due to several reasons. One possibility is that they re-entered the country using a new passport after replacing the old passport which was about to expire, ” he told a media briefing here.
“We want to determine if they are involved in any criminal activities, there is a chance some are involved in smuggling, human trafficking or any other cross-border crime,” he said.
Alias said they would be detained the moment they enter the country if investigations found anything suspicious.
The biometric system which was introduced on June 1 was aimed at checking cross-border crime involving foreign nationals.
