Just when the BN is giving loud hints to raise morale of their party campaigners the public cannot be faulted to form the impression that the 13th GE has all but started, without the blowing of the official whistle! Drastic increases in voters in certain crucial constituencies eg in Perak, Penang, had caused alarms to those incumbent affected/targeted. Yet the official responses to all these criticisms had not calm speculations eg the rule to require DAP to provide IC copy with every voter registration form only shows that the Election Commission is being partisan-if the report can be confirmed. MEO-Net had ascertained with Sarawak EC that there was never a need for attaching IC copy with each voter registration form-despite assertion to the contrary in the past. So, now, why is there is need to make it more difficult to register voters?
There has always been irregularities in the electoral rolls -but the irregularities uncovered now will take on more sinister hues. Also honestly there are honest mistakes or simply mistakes due to fatigue and carelessness among the not so highly paid EC staff. The challenge is to rise up higher than these careless mistakes and locate the policy-directed mistakes! The methods are there: but gathering past and present electoral rolls is a challenge which the parties making various claims are not necessarily happy to provide /share. A national electoral roll cost RM40k++ in 2008. And there are quarterly supplementary rolls which are not provided on-line as it was done some time back.
The media has been giving yet the the strongest push for the people to get into an election frenzy. The speeches of the ruling and opposition politicians are all drawing linkages to the elections! The latest from the ruling parties is the PM Najib’s declaration that he will not compromise with `anarchy’!? Where is the source of this alleged `anarchy’ force that he screamed against? Not many people would like to stretch their imaginations to link Bersih with any chaos. The May 13th mayhem is more than 2 generations apart-the majority of the voters now are born after the period. Even less people would link Bersih or any of the peaceful rallies in the capital with any chaos. But is it deliberately done for political mileage by the ruling party?
The Opposition parties had also contributed to this election frenzy eg they have the time and space to conduct more in-depth study into the mal-administration of election more than any other groups eg NGOs or academia. They hold the electoral rolls used in the polling stations which retain the information of which voters really came out to cast their vote-just short of how they vote. Yet they mostly threw these invaluable information away-whether win or lose! There are many ways to study if voters movements-no matter how big or small, if there are political motives behind them or not. Shouting against something by mistakes may not help their cause and may just make more voters feel helpless and cynical.
Under such condition the need for more objective study into the electoral system stands out as more relevant than ever.
A healthy society need to look into eg rocket science or brain surgeries, apart from squandering the best brains and energies into politicking. Putting up the election dates well ahead for all preparations to be possible to be made in time will allow the citizens to focus on election and other worthy endeavours in the society according to an appropriate timetable.
