11.11.11, which will not repeat in a century, passed without the much anticipated announcement of the dissolution of Parliament by the PM Najib-but it is no time for complacency! There are numerous challenging development on the electoral front and struggles going on that need more attention:

* Overseas Malaysian students are taking the government to court for failing to register them to vote-this follow the unsuccessful attempt by many of them to register themselves as voters.MCA’s attack on the overseas Malaysians’ voting right rightfully attract negative reactions from both sides of the party divide-serve them right!

The coming of 13th General Elections is behind numerous policy initiatives which otherwise may not make much sense: eg the 1Kedai initiative started by the government-which supposedly offer goods at discounted prices to people hard hit by inflation. Where do the discount come from if not from the same restricted government budget? The rational policy should be to correct the economic policies to combat inflation-stop gap measures to reduce prices will not be sustainable. But the coming of elections make sense of such `policy’! Is BN/UMNO the only party that can come out with such policies?

In Egypt the Muslim Brotherhood has been known to distribute cheap meat and other goods ahead of election. The measure certainly do not last and not meant to last. The objective is the same: trying to buy votes! They are meant to be substitute of sound economic policies that do not contribute to inflation. Eg the hiking of electricity, fuel, water rates, road tolls etc -all done by government or Government linked companies, are big contributors of inflation. In comparison to such long term measures that suck the people’s money the discounts at 1Kedai is not able to make up for the inflationary pressures on the people’s life. However the same government is happy to trumpet that they are doing something about inflation with their government’s `power’ and `money’!

Issues of Bengoh dam spreaded further by film!

Just when the power that be think that the small number of villagers affected by Bengoh dam will fade away without anyone noticing them the new Bengoh film `Ulu Bengoh Darom Piin’ stirs up a storm in its Kuching screening-even to the extent of catching attention of the Utusan Borneo-a Malay mainstream media that usually stay clear of such `controversial’ issues. As more people get to know about the plight of the villagers there will be more scrutiny on the way the dam project was handled-and more pressures on the government to get it right in coming up with appropriate compensation package and options for the villagers. So readers can contribute to the solution by passing on the bitter story of these Bengoh folks. Make sure that their problems will not be forgotten in the government’s handling of the Rm300+mil project!

Bengoh film turn heads in Kuching!

A very positive review of the film by Hornbill Unleashed-`boost for participatory democracy in Sarawak’:

Films and Freedom

— Hornbill Unleashed @ 12:03 AM

Pak Bui
The Freedom Film Fest received an enthusiasic welcome when it came to Kuching and Miri during the last weekend of October.
This is the fourth year this excellent film festival has come to Sarawak, showing challenging films about human rights, politics and democracy, sexuality, religion, indigenous people’s issues and society – far more intriguing films than the standard commercial drivel in our cineplexes.
The five films screened were free, in more sense than one. The festival was open to all Sarawakians, and all were welcome, with only a collection box going around.
The crowd in Kuching were mostly young, bubbly and courteous. There were around 300 people packed into the narrow conference room at the Harbour View Hotel.
Many of the participants – for they  weighed into debates and discussions, and were not simply a passive audience – were college students, from all ethnic groups.

The speculations about the date of the coming 13th General Elections continue-but no firm conclusion can be drawn yet. The favorites are either November or after February next year. Since there has not been strong pressures on BN currently and both PKR and UMNO have planned party congress around end of this month the popular choice for 13th GE seems to gravitate towards early next year. The mandate of the current government will only run out in March the following year in 2013. Meanwhile an early GE will not go down well with certain quarters who demand that the PSC on electoral reform must show some results before the GE is held. They-the students and MCLM, endorsed by BERSIH, threaten to hold a 3rd Bersih rally in the capital should GE is announced ahead of the election system being overhauled! So: the pressures is more on the BN holding the GE later than earlier! The speculation that the Mahathir factions trying to engineer Najib’s ouster ahead of 13th GE has not been corroborated by any political fireworks that must precede such dramatic action.
