The 13th General Elections in Malaysia is still shrouded in secrecy-the PM reportedly refused to give any hint of the date in a campaign function yesterday in Terengganu. Compare this with Egypt: presidential election scheduled for June; Myanmar’s election scheduled for April 1st(sic). Why the military backed regimes can frankly declare the election dates while the `democratic’ regime in Malaysia can’t announce the election date? Without a clear date it appear that the ruling party simply want to steal another victory by holding a snap poll! Catching the Opposition by surprise seems to be the main consideration behind the poll’s scheduling. It is not about a ruling party facing a lack of parliamentary confidence and therefore need to go back to the people for a fresh mandate. Neither is it about the term of government is expiring. The whole point is simply to exact an advantage over the Opposition while it still can, as an elected government.
So: if the ruling party intend to score victory without playing the game fair and square would the voters oblige and hand the votes over to them as they had done in all previous elections? Let’s see if the more educated and enlightened electorates will buy BN’s unfair practices.
